Adventurer and His Basilisk by InkWorthy Adventurer and His Basilisk by InkWorthy
A young wizard hatched his first dragon egg not so long ago - or so he thought. To his surprise, it wasn't a dragon but a basilisk! Still, a pair of wings is a pair of wings - the unlikely transport will get him to where he needs to go, nevertheless! The pair is off to an adventure with the object of collecting magical artifacts from all ends of the earth in mind.

In European bestiaries & legends, a basilisk is a legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents & said to have the power to cause death with a single glance.

I haven't decided which to submit yet but I might consider submitting this together with Lucifer [link] . I think it's alright if you made it in the past so long as it brings out the spirit of our great master Frazetta :D

I think my friend would be specially awed to see this one! She loves dynamic poses :D I always thought Basilisks were snake-like creatures, yours has bird qualities but it works very well!

Thank you, Fran! I tried to put in a mix of cockatrice qualities into this basilisk and it turned out well. There really are fantastic creatures other than the popular dragon

I'm very bad at remembering names... I looked up Harry Clarke. I had come across his stuff before and they are great.
I particularly like Audrey Beardsley.

I am petrified by the beauty of this piece. Our adventurer is really corageous, but the gain is worth the risk. He'll just have to watch his back, for sure his adversaries would never attack him from the front! ;)
Wonderful hetching! :)

Teeheehee :giggle: You are right :D! They have a lot of adventures to look forward to! But I am sure our hero will have happy endings on each one he undertakes. With a partner so fierce, what could go wrong? ;)

Very good paper color choice; it's not the usual white, and thus adds something different, almost antique to the piece. Gorgeous line work and exquisite range of value.

I'll note that the human body gets a little lost within the basilisk. I like the composition and the idea that the two figures "are one", because the shape makes me want to take a closer look. However, when I get that closer look, there still isn't much of a difference in contrast between the two figures. Maybe should have added more white spaces to make him pop a bit.

I like how the lines in the background are at a slant, instead of just vertical lines of rain. It adds a new dimension to the piece.

My only other confusion is that I found this piece in the "watercolor" section of the Traditional Medium group...unless the unusual tint is from watercolor...o_O!

Thank you very much for REALLY looking at my work! I sincerely appreciate it :)

Yes, you are right - I actually considered outlining the Adventurer with white to separate him from the Basilisk but this would diminish some of the detailing (especially around the chain mail). I think some white around the cape should do the trick :?

Yes, I'm also very happy with this background. It's the first time I tried "splayed lines" like this & I was surprised it turned out really well :)

Teeheehee... Traditional Media group only has a folder for "Watercolor - Ink Works" so I submitted it there, as my drawing is in ink :D

No, thank you very much for making such a great piece! I love looking at fantasy works like this.

I know what you mean about diminishing detail. The details are usually the fun par! But, eh, I wouldn't recommend a white outline...that may flatten the work and make it look too graphic...don’t work with “outlines,” maybe more on “spaces” within the figure. (That probably doesn’t make any sense.) Approach it like you did with the clouds beneath the figure. They pop out but they’re not necessarily outlines.

The only example I can think of is this:

[link]

Or completely ignore it, your piece is very beautiful and stands on its own ^_^.

Ohhh, okay, watercolor ink works. Makes more sense, just wondering! I was looking at all these bright, colorful pieces and then this black ink picture caught my eye.

Oh, and I just noticed something I forgot to comment on before. On the top of the image are some wrinkles/crease marks. I can't tell of it's the paper or not, but if it is, it works!! It gives it that...antique, ancient scroll, hidden dragon feel XD.

I look forward to seeing more of your work <3

Hmmm... I'll work on improving that aspect in my work (when dealing with "mash-up" figures & objects). I'll figure it out! Thanks for the example :la:

Hurhurhur  Yeah, tell me about it: my ink-work looks like a black sheep amidst all the watercolor-work in the group!

Yes, it is paper, which I just layered onto the original ink drawing with photoshop. The ink drawing was actually done on parchment :D . I'm very happy to hear that it turned out well :)

I will try to make more soon!

This has a fantastic old parchment feel to it, like a scene from a knights story book he would use to tell of his heroics- I'm very envious of your delicacy and uniformity to your mark making.
